I have been using Macrium Reflect with my HP Vista x32 Laptop for a year now with a 100% success rate using the Win PE Rescue CD and Macrium Reflect in fact this is my very first post on the Forum because I have never ever had a single problem with Macrium Reflect before.

When I bought my new HP Pavilion HPE-270f Win 7 x64 computer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883147178 the first thing I did was to purchase an additional Macrium Reflect license, burn a Win PE 2.1 Rescue CD and make full backups on 2 of my 1 TB external disc drives.

Much to my surprise this HP Win 7 Desktop computer does not recognize the Win PE 2.1 Rescue CD during boot! In fact none of the F keys have any effect during boot and using the F-10 key to access the BIOS as instructed by HP Tech Support is of no avail as the computer just goes about its 20 second boot up without slowing down to offer any of the usual F-key accessed alternatives that my Vista computer did on each and every boot.

The only 2 ways I have found to enter the Preinstall Environment with this new Win 7 computer is either by inserting the first HP Factory Recovery DVD or by selecting to restore the 22.7 GB MS Created System Image through the Recovery Manager and restarting the computer to enter the PE and I am desperately trying to find out how to restore the 9 GB Image created by Macrium Reflect, but as I said as it is now the computer simply will not recognize the Win PE 2.1 Rescue CD created by Reflect.

I am sure that this is not a problem with the Rescue CD, but rather a problem of getting this new HP Win 7 Desktop to do an Image Restore using the ever reliable Macrium Reflect. Any and all suggestions are welcome as I have become unable to feel safe and comfortable running any of my computers without being able to restore a Macrium Reflect Image should any kind of disaster strike.

Hi Maxx

Thanks for contacting us. Sorry you are having problems.

If you are able to boot other DVD's then the problem is likely to be with the media that the Reflect rescue CD is burnt to. Windows PE uses 'El Torito no emulation' booting which is common to all Windows installation and boot discs.

Can you try to burn to fresh media of a different type, e.g. try RW media or +R.

Also, are you able to start the rescue environment from the Windows boot menu? Take the 'Other Tasks' > 'Add recovery boot menu' option.

Kind Regards

Nick - Macrium Support

Nick- Thank you so much for your reply! I took your advise and burned the Win PE 2.1 onto the same brand of DVD +R disc that I burned my set of Win 7 Factory Restore Discs to which have proven to work with my computer, but the computer failed to read it. I am sure that this is the fault of my Win 7 x64 computer because I have never had this problem using my Win Vista computer which responded to the Rescue CD each and every time I loaded it!

Yes, I can start the Rescue Environment from the Windows Boot Menu, but I have not tried the 'Other Tasks' > 'Add recovery boot menu' option yet. I will let you know how that goes as soon as I am able to shut down the computer and try it. Are there any other instructions you have once I get into the 'Other Tasks" because all I've seen so far is the option to Restore a 22 GB MS System Image stored on a 1 TB drive alongside the 10 GB Reflect Image of the same drive which I would much rather be using considering my 100% success rate with Macruim Reflect.

I have gotten to this screen and clicked on Restore System Image and found that it will recover the MS System Image from a remote drive. Is there any way to get the computer to restore a Reflect Image starting from this screen?

john.p- Thank you so very much for your help. I started my computer using the start button with the Win 7 x64 iso freshly burned on a DVD +R which as I understand is the MS recommended media for this use and I still did not get the "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" message...

I booted again and went into the rescue environment as Nick suggested but I did not see the 'Other Tasks' > 'Add recovery boot menu' option anywhere. It may have been inside the Recovery Manager, but I was apprehensive about going in to check because I am trying to avoid having to do another System Recovery and loosing all of the work I have done. Although I am now wondering if the 'Windows boot menu' that he spoke of might be located in the BIOS settings.

Could you kindly help me to find the location of the 'Other Tasks' > 'Add recovery boot menu' in the rescue environment so that I might get my Win 7 x64 computer to recognize a Macrium Reflect Rescue Disc like my Win Vista x32 computer has done each and every every time I have used it?

John- From the tutorial at http://www.macrium.com/webhelp/Windows_Boot_Menu.asp this is the screen I should see when making a Windows Boot Menu in Reflect...

When I select 'Add Boot Menu' in Reflect on my computer the prompt to create a Rescue CD comes up and a reminder that I have already downloaded it, but no mention of the Windows Boot Menu...

How might I go about using the PE v2.1.2733 that I have already downloaded?

~Maxx~

PS- I also just noticed that I can no longer locate the c:boot\Macrium file on the computer.

Please run the Windows PE installer that you previously downloaded. The file will be named 'WinPEInstall.exe' or 'WinPEInstallx64.exe' if you downloaded the 64 bit version. The default location is your Windows desktop.

This folder is created once Windows PE is installed.

Nick- Much to my surprise v4.2.2866 was available for download when I opened up Macrium Reflect this morning! In the update notice it said that an updated PE was also available, but so far I have not been able to locate it.

As far as the Win PE v4.2.2733 that I downloaded I have it burned to DVD +R and I have what I believe to be the original file, but I can not find the Win PE Installer you spoke of. I'm sorry to be such a nuisance, but I have been running Macrium Reflect without a single problem on my Vista x32 computer for almost 1 year now and now with Win 7 x64 I am running into all of these difficulties and I thank you for helping me get through them. Is there a way to install the Win PE from the 144 MB v4.2.2733 file of it that I have?

Nick- This is a screen capture of the v2.1.2733/WinPEx64.iso folder that I downloaded, but I can not find the 'WinPEInstallx64.exe' contained in the 144 MB download...

Please advise me how to proceed from here in that I have been saving Macrium Reflect Backup Images with hopes of being able to restore one of them to my Win 7 x64 computer should the situation arise when I need them.

~Maxx~

PS- Out of curiosity I fired up my Vista x32 Laptop which has Reflect 4.2.2733 installed and added the Boot Menu Option and it went through all of the steps with none of the problems that the Win 7 x64 desktop is having.

Nick- It worked! Everything went just as you said it would right down to the Reflect boot folder showing up at the top of the folder tree on the computer's C drive! I immediately created a v2.1.2866 Rescue CD, popped it into the optical drive and when I restarted the computer I didn't even have to press a key on the keyboard and a black screen appeared offering a choice of a normal Win 7 boot or a Macrium Reflect boot. I chose Reflect and went into the PE and found the familiar sight of the Macrium Reflect PE Menu! You have made me a very happy man!

I can't thank you enough for hanging in there and helping me to find a way to use Macrium Reflect on my new HP Pavilion HPE 270f Win 7 x64 computer...

Even though this new computer runs 600% faster than my HP Vista laptop I simply could not fully enjoy using it without the ever dependable Macruim Reflect to back it up. It has taken me almost 1 month to get Reflect to work properly on this Win 7 x64 computer and knowing that it now does is finally allowing me to fully enjoy my new computer with the peace of mind that only the security and dependability of having Macrium Reflect Image Backup can bring.
