I have the latest version of Reflect v5, downloaded tonight.

Tried to clone 40GB hdd to 80GB hdd for testing.

Cloning appeared to be successful, however when I try to boot from the cloned disk, I can only get as far as the windows startup screen and then it reboots.

Initially when booting from the cloned disk I was seeing grey bars running across the screen when loading and I was being offered a menu option of Windows XP or Reflect system recovery.

I then tried the system recovery and I went into Windows Boot Problems and loaded a new boot record etc. Now I am getting to the windows screen straight away and then it just reboots again.

Are you able to assist me in understanding what is happening here?

Many Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for contacting us.

The issue sounds like the cloned disk has been put into a different machine, is this the case ?

If so then you would need to use ReDeploy to inject drivers into the Windows operating system in order to get it booting.

Kind regards.

Chris.

Thanks for the quick response Chris.

No, the drive is being put into the same system so no drivers issues.

In the meantime I have used the recovery disc and a system image (on DVD) of the same system and I tried to restore the disc image to the 80GB hdd. This went appeared to go OK but again once finished the system doesn't boot to the new disc.

I am back to where I was initially with the cloning. I get the grey bar across the bottom of the screen, then a menu offering Windows XP or System Recovery. I choose XP and the it goes to the screen which indicates that windows didn't boot correctly . I choose "Start Windows Normally" i get to the Windows Start screen and it just reboots.

Hi maco

Do you have the original disk (40GB) attached to the system when booting with the cloned disk? If so, can you detach it an try again.

Kind Regards

Thanks Nick,

No the original 40Gb hdd has been removed. The only hdd in the system is the 80gb

Edit - I have tried the 40GB hdd back in the system and it boots fine.
When I replace it with the 80GB it doesn't boot

Hi

Thanks for getting back. Sorry that didn't help.

Can you restart your PC with the original disk as the boot disk and the cloned disk attached. Then send your system information file to support(at)macrium.com. This will enable us to understand your setup better.

Run 'System Information' ('All Programs' > 'Accessories' > 'System Tools' > 'System Information') and take the 'File' > 'Save' menu option. Save the '.nfo' file and attach it to your email.

Could you also attach the 'c:\boot.ini' files from both disks?

Many thanks

Nick,

I am unable to do this when i have both drives installed, as it seems that the system doesnt want to boot from the 40GB when both are installed. I have checked the BIOs to ensure the HDD boot order but I cant get the system to boot with both drives in.

40GB is connected via IDE and the 80GB is on SATA.

Not quite sure why this is happening.

I used a USB drive dock for the 80 GB initially to create the clone drive. So I put the 80 back in the dock and I am able to boot up from the 40GB and I can see the 80GB also.

I will get the info and email it through.

Thnx

I have the system inf saved and also have made a copy of boot.ini from C: (the 40GB hdd ).

I was unable to find a boot.ini file on either disk using search. So i made the copy on the 40GB boot.ini via System Properties, Advanced, Startup and recovery Settings.

Any ideas on how to get the boot.ini from the other drive?

I think this might be your problem. Are you booting with the 80GB drive connected to SATA? If so, Windows XP may not have the correct driver to boot from this controller. Are you running Macrium Reflect v5 professional? If so please run ReDeploy to correct this problem.

If this doesn't help then send the .nfo file to us together with the 'boot.ini' files. You may not be able to see the second boot.ini file because it is a hidden, system file. Change Windows Explorer to show these files and you should be OK.

Kind Regards

Nick,

The redeploy worked. I can now boot to the 80GB hdd.

The only thing that I can see that is now wrong is that the audio driver is not there in the cloned setup. Looks like I will have to reinstall it.

Is there any reason why this driver only would fail to come across?

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Is it possible that some files required for the audio driver were stored on a different disk ? As the clone disk performs an exact copy of a disk there is wouldn't be any files missing from the clone.

Kind regards.

Chris.

Thanks Chris,

Not sure what happened with the audio driver. It should be on the cloned disk. It is not stored elsewhere.

I tried a clone with an another IDE disk and it worked fine. Just seems to have been an issue with cloning to SATA.
