I disk image of Windows 7 and my various programs in August 2011 based on a clean install of Windows 7 and all updates to that point in time. Since then Macrium has made a daily backup of my entire User file on the C drive. Recently, using an identical hard drive restored the image I made in August 2011 and updated Windows. The system seems to work very well. Then I restored one of the daily backups to the same location in the restored image. After about 16% I received questions regarding certain files that were locked and could not be written to. I allowed the restore to skip these files. A number of files were .dat type files.

After the restore was completed, when I would try to launch an application my system would just stall and indicate that the application was not responding. Eventually I just reinstalled the hard drive with the older operating system.

What do you think I did wrong? Is there any way to override the lock out caused by Windows?

Hi,

Thanks for posting.

The .dat files could be program files which had been locked due to them being open at time of restore. I recommend that you restore from within WindowsPE to ensure that no files are locked, this should ensure that you restore completes sucessfully.

If you need any more help please contact us back.

Kind Regards,
