I've been playing around with the 30 day free trial of version 5 and discovered something wrong in its Windows PE boot disc. So, I burned my old version 4 Windows PE boot disc and tested it and it occurred on both versions.

What happens is the program totally freezes up on Initializing while trying to write to SATA connected DVD burners. Even the Cancel button cannot be selected because it never highlights. I waited 5 minutes and still nothing. Not even drive light activity on the CD. There IS light activity on the HD, but that's it. Now, even Windows doesn't take 5 minutes to initialize and it's the slowest program known to man, except maybe Ad-Aware; so, something stops somewhere.

I tested a USB DVD burner and it writes to them. It also writes images to HD. So, it's the burners connected to the SATA that seem to be the problem.

Now, I do mention this as a caveat. I may need to replace this PC with a new one for a wide variety of problems I can't fix. So, I'll have to test this on a new PC and see if it's just my current system. But, I am making it known for now in case this is something that needs to be tested.

Thanks!

I tried the Windows PE environment on the new PC and it, too, failed to properly write to SATA connected burners! The Windows PE 2.1 environment does NOT work for backing up to SATA connected burners! It DID get past the Initialzing stage though, but, all it did was write a 233 KB file to the disc. The Verfiy failed because the file written was not valid. Trying to load the file from disc does not return anything the application can load for restoring. The Verfiy just says it failed because there's no apparent way to check logs, as the application SAYS to do, in the Windows PE environment.

If anyone would be willing to try, please try to use a Windows PE 2.1 boot disc and try creating an image file to SATA connected DVD burners. That way I can see if it really is a problem in the environment itself.

Thanks!

Hi,

Sorry to hear you are having problems. We have tested SATA connected CD/DVD burners and not found any issues in general with such devices. This is the standard interface modern computers.

It could be an issue specific either to your model of drive or your specific drive. Have you tried burning files to a writable CD using windows explorer?

Kind Regards

Not using Windows Explorer, but, I have used ImgBurn (I'm a beta tester.) to write various image file types to discs on both the old and new computer and they write okay.

Strange, though, I had the exact same problem on two separate computers trying to write to SATA drives. One was a locally built machine and the new one is a Dell XPS 8300. Tried two SATA drives in the first machine, one a LiteOn and the other an Optiarc. The Dell uses what I believe is a LiteOn. Can't really tell because the search for firmware updates for it did not return any exact hits, but returned about 460 different hits on LiteOn drives.

As long as you've tested it yourself, then, I am satisfied. I didn't want to accuse anyone of not testing it but I thought the issue should be explored because I had gotten repeat errors on two separate machines.
